Giant Eagle Lettuce/Deli Sandwiches Affected

More lettuce recalled due to Listeria.

October 15, Food Safety News – (National)

In a recall related to one previously announced by Giant Eagle, the Pittsburgh-based grocer chain, the producer River Ranch Fresh Foods of Salinas, California announced October 14 it is taking 2,154 cases of various bagged salads off the market because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The bacteria was detected during a routine random test by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

The recall includes:

• Farmers Market:

- 8-ounce Shredded Iceberg;

- 7-ounce Parisian Blend;

- 9-ounce Leafy Romaine; and

- 12-ounce Romaine Garden

• Hy-Vee:

- 8-ounce Shredded Iceberg,

- 12-ounce American Blend;

- 12-ounce Garden Supreme; and

- 12-ounce Romaine Garden.

The salads were produced September 27 and distributed in Iowa, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, and sold in retail supermarkets.

River Ranch Recalls Products Because of Possible Health Risk

River Ranch Fresh Foods, LLC of Salinas, CA is initiating a voluntary recall of 2,154 cases of various bagged salad products due to the potential of being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes following a routine random test conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

The bagged salad products subject to the recall include:

The above products were produced on September 27, 2011 with Best By dates of October 14, 2011.

These salad products were distributed in Iowa, Ohio, and Pennsylvania and sold in retail supermarkets.

No other products or code dates are affected by this recall.

There have been no reported illnesses attributed to the recalled items.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume the products and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers may contact the company at their 24-hour customer service center at 1-800-762-7708. Consumers with concerns about an illness from consumption of this product should contact a health care provider.

Listeria test causes iceberg lettuce recall

October 14, Food Safety News– (National)

Giant Eagle is recalling bags of shredded Iceberg lettuce and some deli sandwiches because they may be contaminated with Listeria, Food Safety News reported October 14.

The Food and Drug Administration informed the company that a random sample of Giant Eagle Farmer's Market 8-ounce package of Shredded Iceberg Lettuce, produced by River Ranch Fresh Foods tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled packages have a use-by date of October 14, 2011 and the UPC 3003430195.

The recalled lettuce was also used in some prepared deli ring sandwiches:
Giant Eagle Large Italian Sandwich Ring, UPC 23755100000;
Giant Eagle Mini Italian Sandwich Ring, UPC 24755500000;
Giant Eagle Large New York Sandwich Ring, UPC 22755100000;
Giant Eagle Mini New York Sandwich Ring, UPC 25755500000;
Giant Eagle Large All America Sandwich Ring, UPC 21755100000; and
Giant Eagle Mini All American Sandwich Ring, UPC 26755500000.

Giant Eagle said it has contacted customers who purchased the recalled products, telling them to throw the food away or return it to the store for a refund.
